Why choose This Nathan Mid-Century Bureau?

History of the Bureau

Bureaus have a wonderfully rich history, dating back to the 1600’s, when they were nothing more than a tilted flat surface for “scribing”, to the incredibly elaborate “Wooton desk” versions of the 1880’s.

In today’s world, many of us are spending more time working from home. As a result, bureaus are experiencing something of a renaissance. They have become an essential piece of furniture for people looking for stylish elegance, modern-day practicality and, in this case, a wonderfully eye-catching, stylish design.

Bespoke Creation for Grand Designs Live

This particular bureau painted in Coal Black with the zigzag pattern was a commission for the House of Upcycling stand at Grand Designs Live, as part of a ‘Rustic Contemporary’ room set.

The striking reverse zig-zag pattern was created by hand taping the design onto the original piece, gently painting over with a bold, contemporary Coal Black colour, then painstakingly removing the tape, revealing just the right amount of the original wood to create a truly unique, one-off piece.

The bureau was much admired whilst on show at the recent Grand Designs Live exhibition in Birmingham, particularly for its butter smooth paintwork and original design and is now available for purchase.
